Getting a new apartment is a real game changer. It allows you to start fresh, get an amazing place with all of the modern conveniences, and live in the neighborhood where you want to be.
Getting a two bedroom instead of one has its perks even if it means taking on a roommate as they often have bigger kitchens, living rooms, and other common spaces. The only challenge is finding the perfect roommate.
Reach out to your friends and family to ask if they know anyone who is looking for a new place as they will have a good idea how compatible they will be for you. It goes a long way if they vouch for the prospective roommate as you want to be sure that they are trustworthy and friendly. You can also create a post to ask social media connections. That way it is easy for a friend of a friend to become aware of the vacancy.
Don’t just trust friends and their recommendations though. Be sure to interview the person thoroughly and ask the tough questions right up front. This will give the best gauge for how compatible your two lifestyles are to each other as you can find out how often they go out, if they are a smoker or drinker, and what their work or school schedule is like. It also gives the two of you a chance to mutually agree to rules and expectations.
Be sure to clearly lay out what you expect from the roommate. Chores can be outlined and agreed on and you can talk about how often you expect that they will be done. You can also talk about when it is ok to have people over, TV volume, and who gets which room.
It is important to discuss and put into writing the financial arrangements. Work out who will pay each bill, when it is due, and what happens if the roommate moves out. Be very clear and give the roommate a copy of the agreement so there is not any surprises. Be thorough in the process, as choosing a roommate to share your home is an extremely important decision.
